The History of Harley-Davidson®

Harley-Davidson® is, by far, the most iconic American motorcycle manufacturer. In fact, they're by far the most successful company in the United States. So what's gotten them to this point? For that, we have to look back at where they've been. The Beginning

The company first began with childhood friends William S. Harley® and Arthur Davidson designing a single-cylinder engine that was attached to a pedal bike. While this wasn't necessarily a unique idea at the time, they found the initial design didn't accommodate the hills of their Milwaukee home. They adjusted it so it would power itself without the pedals, which would eventually become the foundation of the bikes they released in 1904.

This company they created found great success with their initial design and all the innovations that came afterward. They opened their own factory to increase production and had doubled their engine's horsepower within seven years. Soon, they hit the race track.

Making a Name for the Company

In 1914, World War I broke out and the military needed motorcycles for the effort. The company received an order for 20,000 motorcycles. By 1920, Harley-Davidson® was the largest motorcycle manufacturer on the planet. When it came to setting the standard, no one beat Harley-Davidson®. Even through the Great Depression, they managed to weather the storm and come out the other side, which is one of the reasons they currently hold the title of longest continuously running motorcycle manufacturer. With World War II, the company once again received orders for motorcycles, this time to the tune of 90,000.
